Botox and Soft Tissue Fillers

Botox Cosmetic is a simple, noninvasive technique used to alleviate wrinkles in skin and to give the forehead, eyes and neck a more youthful appearance. Botox has been used successfully and safely in medicine for over 30 years. In 1979 the FDA granted approval of Botox in the treatment of strabismus. In 2003 the FDA approved the usage of Botox for the treatment of forehead wrinkles. In 2005 over 3.3 million procedures were performed using FDA approved Botox Cosmetic.

Over time, repeated facial animation leaves its mark by creating furrows and  wrinkles in the areas of facial expressions. Botox selectively paralyses chosen muscles that create frown lines, crows feet (wrinkles on the side of the eyes), forehead wrinkles, bunny lines (horizontal wrinkles on top of the nose), and the prominent vertical wrinkles above the bridge of the nose. In selective patients, neck banding may also be reduced with Botox Cosmetic.

Soft Tissue Fillers are used to enhance areas of the face either affected by the aging process (wrinkles, furrows, marionette lines, etc…) or to add volume to structures such as the lips or scar depressions. Soft tissue fillers (Juvederm, Restylane, Fat, etc…) can be added to areas where muscle and fat has decreased as a result of the aging process. These areas include the marionette lines on the sides of the mouth, jowling in the chin area and vertical folds above the upper lip. Soft tissue fillers are also used to add size and contours to the upper and lower lips. Younger patients with thin, poorly defined lips and older patients who have lost volume in their lips due to the aging process usually benefit the most. Soft tissue fillers are a relatively quick and painless procedure done in an office setting.
